Materials

Scissors

Scissors have the main usage of simply cutting through object such as paper. You can have many different sizes of scissors all depending on the object that is needed to be cut through. You may also only use one blade of the scissor and score the material, which can be used to either bend the material accurately or so you may tear the material with an accurate line.

In my own work:

I used the scissors to cut through various pieces of colour card to create a collage of paper of which represents a landscape. I also used the scissors to score pieces of card to create bended patterns which added dimension to the work.

Health & Safety: Scissors consist of obvious health & safety hazards. The sharp blades of which are the main part of them can easily cut though skin. Also the point of the scissors can easily penetrate skin and severely damage you. If not held correcting it may even result in death. When travelling scissors should never been held with the point facing up, if you were to fall and trip this has a high probability of directly penetrating your body which could result in extremely serious injuries.

Materials

Eraser

The Eraser can be used in many ways. The main use of the eraser is to be used to simply rub out mistakes in your work. But you can also use the Eraser to add effects to your work. If you lightly rub against your lines that you've drawn you may smudge them and break down the density of the lines. Creating strokes which are of a lighter nature with beautiful tone coming off.

In my own work:

I found the Eraser a very useful tool in my own work to create certain tones which would be nearly impossible to do with simply a pencil. It was also obviously very useful to remove and mistakes made.

Health & Safety: Erasers tend to be one of the more safe tools of the artistic category. They possess little health hazards. But if one were to inhale dust from the eraser then it could lead to health problems. Also it is poisonous to consume or for it to enter the blood stream. So you should always be aware that it may damage you.

Materials

Charcoal

Charcoal is a very unique tool to be used within Art & Media. The effects that can be made by certain techniques can be very dramatic causing dramatic shadowing and in affect vibrant highlights.

The following can be done using Charcoal:

- Sketching design which creates a very toned feel.
- Created very dark shadowing on drawings
- Adding depth to art by creating very dark lines.
- Smudging of the Charcoal when on paper can create a very aesthetically pleasing texture to the piece.

Charcoal can be erased but with some difficulty sometimes. The tip can be sharpened, but you may purchase a range of different types of charcoal with different tips. A different tip is used depending on the requirements that it's needed for.

In my own work:

I found the Charcoal a very useful material to use. It blends very nicely and you can create some very directive strokes which can add curve to the piece, bringing it out of the paper.

Health and Safety: Charcoal if misused can lead to health problems. The dust it creates from drawing can lead to lung issues in the future, so should always be used responsibly.

Materials

Pencil

A pencil is a very useful tool in all aspects of Art & Media. A pencil a very diverse tool and can be used in many ways some of which are listed here:

- Sketching ideas
- Developing sketched ideas
- Creating a base drawing which you then fill with colour
- Creating a  graphite drawing with high detail

The lead of a pencil can be sharpened to give it a very accurate edge. In affect insuring your work is to an accurate level in comparison to hand-movements and gesture.

May different shades of pencil may be obtained. The measurement that this is kept in goes from H(being hard/light) and B(being soft/dark).

In my own work:

I find the pencil to be the most useful tool in art and media. Purely for the fact it's so diverse and creates a brilliant foundation to improve your work upon after sketching out a basic design. I used it to create multiple designs even if it was simply very lightly sketching the lines of which i was to place a different material.
